A Direct Solver for Initial Value Problems of Rarefied Gas Flows of Arbitrary Statistics
نویسندگان
چکیده
An accurate and direct algorithm for solving the semiclassical Boltzmann equation with relaxation time approximation in phase space is presented for parallel treatment of rarefied gas flows of particles of three statistics. The discrete ordinate method is first applied to discretize the velocity space of the distribution function to render a set of scalar conservation laws with source term. The high order weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme is then implemented to capture the time evolution of the discretized velocity distribution function in physical space and time. The method is developed for two space dimensions and implemented on gas particles that obey the Maxwell-Boltzmann, Bose-Einstein and Fermi-Dirac statistics. Computational examples in oneand two-dimensional initial value problems of rarefied gas flows are presented and the results indicating good resolution of the main flow features can be achieved. Flows of wide range of relaxation times and Knudsen numbers covering different flow regimes are computed to validate the robustness of the method. The recovery of quantum statistics to the classical limit is also tested for small fugacity values. AMS subject classifications: 82-08, 82B30, 82B40, 35Q20

Unified Solver for Rarefied and Continuum Flows in Multi- Component Gas Mixtures
A Unified Flow Solver (UFS) has been developed for simulations of rarefied, transitional and continuum flows based on direct numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation coupled to kinetic schemes of gas dynamics. The UFS uses dynamically adaptive mesh and automatic domain decomposition into kinetic and continuum domains based on continuum breakdown criteria. This paper describes UFS extensions...
متن کاملA Multiscale Particle Approach for Continuum/Rarefied Flow Simulation
A hybrid particle scheme is presented for the simulation of compressible gas flows involving both continuum regions and rarefied regions with strong translational nonequilibrium. The direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is applied in rarefied regions, while remaining portions of the flowfield are simulated using a DSMC-based low diffusion particle method for inviscid flow simulation. The...

Formulation and verification of unsteady rarefied flow solver based on Boltzmann-ESBGK equations in arbitrary three-dimensional geometries is presented. The solver is based on the finite volume method in physical space and the discrete ordinate method in velocity space with an implicit time discretization. Verification is carried out for an unsteady approach to equilibrium, a steady one-dimensi...
متن کاملDevelopment of an Efficient Particle Approach for Micro-scale Gas Flow Simulations
The micro-scale gas flows are usually low-speed flows and exhibit rarefied gas effects. It is challenging to simulate these flows because traditional CFD method is unable to capture the rarefied gas effects and the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is very inefficient for low-speed flows. In this study we combine two techniques to improve the efficiency of the DSMC method. The informa...
